We all know that tiki torches can add ambiance to any outdoor occasion, but did you know the Citronella and Lemon Eucalyptus used in the torch fuel can also lift your spirits? We put these potent essential oils in our torch fuel to repel insects, and they do a great job. Lemon Eucalyptus works SO well, it’s been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control as an effective way to prevent West Nile Virus.
Both oils also smell great (to us…to mosquitoes, not so much), but it doesn’t end there. The scent of these fresh, citrusy oils has been reported to soothe nerves, awaken the mind and induce a sense of well-being. (NOTE: This is not an invitation to purposefully inhale tiki torch fuel fumes. Just enjoy the aroma of your torches burning from a safe distance.)
Practitioners of natural medicine have been using Lemon Eucalyptus and Citronella for centuries to cure a host of maladies. Here are just a few uses for the oils (we’re talking about pure essential plant oils, NOT tiki torch fuel):
Lemon Eucalyptus Oil makes a great room disinfectant with its fresh, lemony high notes and its balsamic floral low notes. The oil can be used in a diffuser to open sinus and bronchial passages, and help with laryngitis, sore throats, emphysema and a smokers’ cough, and can even help you cut back on cigarette cravings! It also has strong antiseptic and antifungal properties that can be used to counteract athlete’s foot and can be applied to wounds to help them heal faster.
Citronella Oil is a powerful antidepressant with the ability to relieve mental stress and anxiety. Many aromatherapists use Citronella to treat mental and emotional strain. Using the essential oil in an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer can relieve the symptoms of colds and the flu, chest congestion and even migraine headaches. Citronella oil also has antiseptic properties – a few drops of essential oil on a bandage can help a wound heal more quickly and prevent infection.
So, while the scents of these essential oils may be unsavory to insects, we humans can benefit quite a bit from their aromatherapeutic properties! Do you know of other uses for these oils? Let us know!
