DIY – How To Create a Mason Jar Oil Lamp

Here’s a great craft using a mason jar. Why not turn it into a DIY oil lamp? This is a short, instructional video to show you the basics of creating a DIY mason jar oil lamp.

Being the creative ninja you are, I’m sure you will find ingenious ways of decorating the jar on the inside. And, yes, you can put just about anything you like in the jar. To get some great ideas, simply Google “Mason Jar Oil Lamps”.

The paraffin lamp oil that you use will preserve the fresh greens, berries, flowers, etc. You can see how this is a great seasonal craft as well as a functional item for a beach house. Fill it will shells, sand, and driftwood.

How to Make a Mason Jar Oil Lamp

I have noticed that many of the projects simply show a wick protruding from the lid and they don’t go into the operating details. This is where our video comes in. Phil provides detailed instructions on the basics of creating a mason jar oil lamp.

Can you please tell me what the difference is between YOUR lamp oil and Ultra Pure lamp oil that is available at local craft store?

Firefly Paraffin Lamp Oil meets the highest quality specifications that define the purity of paraffin fuels. We exceed Ultra Pure’s specification range. These specifications are industry standards.

      Thanks for writing.

I had prrviously read somewhere that fiberglass wicks are better….but I see that you use cotton wicks…..??????

Fiberglass wicks work well when using large wicks (1/2″ for tiki torches). We have found the cotton wicks to work well for smaller wicks. I would suggest either a 2.6mm or 3.6mm wick for a mason jar. The video shows a 3.6mm cotton wick.

I used mineral oil with fiberglass wicks..would not stay lit…then used ultra pure parrafin oil with fiberglass wicks ..flame was too high..the fiberglass wicks were tubular…making mason jar lamps….any help would be greatly appreciated…thanks

Mineral oil is not a suitable source of fuel for oil candles or mason jar candles. I would suggest using a 2.6mm or 3.6mm wick with a quality lamp oil like Firefly Paraffin Lamp Oil, Firefly CLEAN Lamp Oil or Safe & Green.
